Everything is not always within my control, but a whole lot is. If I want to be treated with respect, I have to have the courage to demand it and not just wish it. It’s not enough to treat others the way you want to be treated. They have their own set of rules, norms, expectations. Every time we meet someone, start a job, join a team or engage in conversation, we bring an expectation about how we want to be treated. When it comes to teams, we bring expectations about how team members treat each other.
If others take advantage of me, it’s because I let them. If people disrespect me, it’s because I sit quiet. Leaders set boundaries, they challenge themselves and others. If you are not getting the results you want, look in the mirror first.
