Seek advice, listen, and reflect – but do what’s right for you

Have you ever planned a wedding or big event? It doesn’t take long before the expectations of others are clouding your thoughts. Do you still remember your own dreams for that special day after taking in all the advice from others?

The same is true for your career. Ask for advice from the people you trust, not just the people telling you what they think. Chances are the quiet ones will have the most thoughtful advice since they have been listening instead of talking. Even if you disagree, listen fully. It shows respect to the advisor and allows you to expand your thinking into new territory.

Give yourself time to reflect on the advice; more time than it takes to shower. I know your best ideas come when you are getting ready for the day, but when you are considering the best path for you, it deserves mindshare. Allow yourself the time you deserve.
